Believe it or not, essential oils can do wonders for acne scars. Not only can they soften and smoothen your skin, but they tend to reduce the overall visibility of the spots and blemishes that acne leaves behind.

Essential Oils to Treat Acne Scars

While there are numerous essential oils you can use to treat acne scars, not all of them may work for you. For me, the 10 essential oils that I recommend for treating acne scars are the following:

Tea Tree Oil

The Melaleuca alternafolia or Tea Tree is an Australian native plant that has gained massive popularity throughout the health and beauty world.

Tea tree oil is used in products that range from shampoos to mouthwashes, it is also highly recommended for treating different types of scars. This oil has strong anti-bacterial elements and can be applied to acne scars to reduce and minimize their appearance.

Lavender Oil

With its antiseptic qualities and mild aroma, lavender oil has been continuously recommended as a treatment for both acne and acne scars.

Unlike tea tree oil, you can dab lavender oil directly onto your scars, twice or three times a day. If it feels too strong, dilute it with water. Lavender oil is also great for reducing redness and promoting skin cell growth.

Frankincense

An all-around oil, Frankincense can be used against infections and stress, preventing oral issues, and, importantly, promoting skin health. It tones and lifts the skin, promotes the regeneration of cells, and eliminates germs that may be lurking on your skin. You can apply it directly on your scars or dilute it with a bit of coconut oil or water.

Carrot Seed

Primarily working as a skin detoxifying and rejuvenating oil, carrot seed can be used by itself or mixed with other essential oils. It is growing popular as an ingredient for anti-aging products as it works wonders in promoting cell regeneration and making the skin softer.

Neroli

Neroli is extracted from the blooms of bitter orange tree, neroli oil offers a soothing scent along with its skin toning and brightening capabilities.

It blends well with other oils and can be used to fade acne scars and stretch marks. It also protects wounds from infection and regulates the production of sebum on the skin, preventing acne breakouts and serious scarring.

Rosehip

Is especially beneficial to people with dry skin, rosehip oil helps rejuvenate skin suffering from acne scars and blemishes. You can massage it directly on the affected areas using your hands or a Q-tip.

Since it packs vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids, it will help even your skin tone and reduce the visibility of your scars. Fair warning, this oil tends to be strong so apply it sparingly and adjust based on result and effects.

Helichrysum

Packing a host of healing properties, the helichrysum oil is one you won’t regret using. The helicrysum oil is best used by itself or mixed with a base oil before application. Not only does it moisturize the skin but it also fades scars and blemishes, stimulates the growth of new skin cells, and protect you against the propagation of skin-aging free radicals.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera oil has antifungal and anti-bacterial properties that help prevent new outbreaks. It also contains two types of hormones that reduces inflammation and promote cell regeneration. As it is a light, non-comedogenic oil, it works well with practically all skin types

Tamanu

A beautifying wonder oil, the tamanu oil is known to cure or aid in healing some of the toughest skin problems such as seriously sun-damaged skin, acne, eczema and rosacea.

This essential oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial components and heaps of antioxidants that promote rapid cell growth and rejuvenate the skin. Tamanu oil can be used as it is or mixed with honey and sugar to form an exfoliating scrub.

Jojoba

More wax-y than oil-y in appearance, jojoba oil is your skin’s natural friend. This organic acne scar treatment soothes, moisturizes, and protects your skin from further damage.

It also restores your skin’s natural pH balance and elasticity. Like tea tree oil, the jojoba oil is very potent; I recommend mixing it with other essential oils before applying it on your skin.

The best acne scar treatments aren’t made of chemicals alone. In fact, most of them are organic and will help save both your skin and some money. Try any of the acne scar essential oils recommended today and see which one works best for you.
